THE NAKED ART SCHOOL

The Naked Art School is a new landscape for the Duncan of Jordanstone Crawford Building. Nakedness refers to the state at which we life-draw the human body at art school. We believe the human form is visible in all artistic disciplines and have made it the central motif of this design. To contrast with the organic nature of the body, the structure is designed with a grid to mimic the way straight lines are used to set up a drawing. This uses the existing donut layout of the building but focuses on its central void as a public space which allows visibility into all levels of the building. We have called this central public space a bird bath, which is not only a space to be observed but to observe others. The studio floors are organised per faculty, encouraging inter-disciplinary collaboration with more populated studios, with lower year groups at the front of the building and more of a relationship to the street. This becomes more dispersed and solitary as you move up through the grid to the top levels. The façade of the existing building was lifted to allow for an extension of the pavement into the building, we have designed a mixed-use social condenser where meetings are spontaneous and determined by chance. This would include a swap shop, recycling facilities, a café and community engagement events. From here, escalators pump people through the building like veins, and intersect with each floor offering visibility into creative studios blending the public with private. An organic shape that appears on the roof-top contains the life-drawing studio, offering feelings of transcendence and utilising the site’s unique relationship to the city and the river. Joseph Beuys stated; ‘every human being is an artist’, and we believe everyone deserves to be inspired by the presence of creativity.
